Nitrofurantoin is in a class of medications called antibiotics. Nitrofurantoin is specifically indicated for the treatment of infections when due to susceptible strains of Escherichia coli, enterococci, staphylococci, Citrobacter, Klebsiella and Enterobacter. It works by killing bacteria that cause infection. It's used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs), including cystitis and kidney infections. When you take nitrofurantoin, your body quickly filters it out of your blood and into your pee. This is useful if you have a urinary tract infection because it means the medicine is concentrated at the site of infection.
